About

Colo-Colo's Monumental has been inaugurated twice. The ground was first opened on 20 April 1975, but the club played only five more matches there, as the facilities were still inadequate. The stadium was completed and inaugurated in its final form on 30 September 1989, with a 2-1 win over Peñarol. With a capacity of 47,000, it saw Colo-Colo lift the Copa Libertadores two years later, the only one ever won by a Chilean club.

The Paseo Monumental combines a guided tour of the stadium lasting about an hour with the Museo Colo-Colo. The route takes in the press room, the memorials, the Túnel de Campeones and the Cancha David Arellano. The museum brings together trophies, historic shirts, a gallery devoted to the players and a range of audiovisual content.

Did you know?

David Arellano, whose name is attached to the Estadio Monumental, was one of the founders of Colo-Colo. A Chilean forward in the 1920s, he scored 8 goals in 6 caps for his country before his sudden death in 1927. Hence the tribute paid to him when the stadium was built.
